Two special experimental programs at WFFBKK 2009
Two guest curators have carefully selected works for two special programs in the World Film Festival of Bangkok's new Guts Nouveau experimental section. They are Sompot Chidgasornpongse who brings us "CalArts Shorts: Portrait Documentaries from Women's Perspective", and Davide Quadrio with "The Head of the Dragon: Shanghai Versus Bangkok".
Filmmaker Sompot "Boat" Chidgasornpongse is a student at the California Institute of the Arts. His "CalArts Shorts: Portrait Documentaries from Women's Perspective" is a collection featuring new directors from the famous arts school.
Boat selected works by female directors who examine social issues in their own societies. “This particular program is not all about CalArts' works, but rather the theme of portrait people in different places through these female filmmakers," he says.
The program comprises five experimental documentaries or hybrid documentaries: "Hollywood" by Stephanie Owens, "Eight Women" by Laura Bouza, "My White Baby" by Akosua Adoma Owusu, "Speech Memory" by Caroline Key and "The Wet Season" by Brigid McCaffrey and Ben Russell. "CalArts Shorts: Portrait Documentaries from Women's Perspective" will be screened on Thursday, November 14 in Paragon 9.
With "The Head of the Dragon: Shanghai Versus Bangkok" is Shanghai-based curator Davide Quadrio, the founder of Arthub, an organization that promotes works from Asian contemporary artists. His program of documentaries and video arts tells stories of the changes in the city of Shanghai.
The program consists of two parts, the feature-length documentary "Shanghai, Waiting for Paradise" and the short-film-and-video package "Shanghype Condensed!"
For "Shanghai, Waiting for Paradise", French filmmaker Sylvie Levey spent five years documenting the Wang family, three generations of Chinese living under one roof in the old city of Shanghai, who are suddenly confronted by the imminent demolition of their home.
"Shanghype Condensed!" comprises a selection from "Shanghype!", which was organized on the occasion of the Artissima 2007 art fair and consisted of short films and video art that testified to the development of Shanghai. It was a sort of celebration and exploration of the city by local and international artists. The screening was held in the Museum of Cinema in Turin, Italy. After that, "Shanghype!" traveled to Prague, where the works were shown at the Futura Centre of Contemporary Art, and, finally, back to Shanghai when it was shown in the Creative Center of Bund18, on The Bund waterfront area, with the mirrored past facing the glittering new development of Pudong.
The four shorts selected for the "Condensed!" program are "Great Era" by Zhang Ding, "Iahgnahs Onhcet" by Speedism, "A Silent Story" by Olivo Barbieri and "Taian Lu" by Mathieu Borysevicz. "The Head of the Dragon: Shanghai versus Bangkok" will be screened on November 9 and 10 in Paragon 12.

CalArts Shorts: Portrait Documentaries from Women's Perspective โปรแกรมสารคดีและภาพยนตร์ทดลองสั้นจากนักศึกษาสถาบัน California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) โดยการคัดสรรค์ของ สมพจน์ ชิตเกษรพงศ์ ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์สั้นดาวรุ่งและอดีตผู้ช่วยผู้กำกับของ อภิชาติพงศ์ วีระเศรษฐกุล ซึ่งปัจจุบันกำลังศึกษาด้านภาพยนตร์อยู่ที่สถาบันแห่งนี้
ความน่าสนใจของโปรแกรมนอกจากการเป็นผลงานของเหล่าเลือดใหม่แล้ว ผลงานทั้งหมดยังเป็นสารคดีทดลองที่เปรียบเสมือนภาพฉายของผู้คนและสถานที่่ ซึ่งผ่านการถ่ายทอดจากสายตาของผู้กำกับหญิงทั้งสิ้น
โดย สมพจน์ ได้พูดถึงผลงานที่เลือกสรรค์ในโปรแกรมนี้ว่า “อันที่จริงแล้วงานทั้งหมดที่เลือกในโปรแกรม ยังไม่ใช่ตัวแทนภาพรวมของงานที่นักเรียนทำใน CalArtsเสียทีเดียว แต่มันเป็นหนังแบบที่ผมสนใจโดยส่วนตัว เป็นการคัดเลือกให้อยู่ในธีมเดียวกัน คือภาพของผู้คนในภาพยนตร์ และงานทั้งหมดนั้นผ่านการถ่ายทอดโดยสายตาของผู้กำกับผู้หญิงโดยตรง ซึ่งมันได้กระตุ้นเชื้อไฟการทำหนังในตัวผมให้ลุกโชนขึ้น เมื่อครั้งที่ได้ชมเป็นครั้งแรก และก็หวังว่าสิ่งเดียวกันนั้นจะเกิดขึ้นกับผู้ชมชาวไทย”
