With its high altitude and clear skies, Chile's Atacama Desert has long been a favourite location for astronomers investigating the mysteries of the night sky. Its barren lands are also popular with archaeologists, who search for engravings, artefacts and mummies that will offer a glimpse of life as it was lived centuries before these scientists arrived. For ordinary Chilean citizens, the desert is the likely burial ground of their relatives and loved ones who disappeared during the violence of the Pinochet regime.
