In 1942, a wounded German soldier, Stroszek, accompanied by his Greek wife and two other soldiers, Meinhard and Becker, is sent to an isolated Greek island to convalesce. Despite the lack of military activity in the area, their task is, for reasons of appearance, to guard an abandoned arsenal. Idle, uneventful days pass by beneath a sweltering, oppressive sun - until the day Stroszek goes mad. ''The fight against the windmills which Strozek starts off as kind of a modern Don Quixote sets in motion the outbreak of insanity.
