Synopsis

This film chronicles the story of Cass Collier and his family, people of colour who surfed in the Apartheid days. It was Cass’s surfing father, Ahmed, who helped Cass become the only black surfer in the top ranks of the sport in South Africa. He wanted his son to make his living from the sport, on the world pro circuit. But Cass went his own way, leaving Islam, the family’s religion, embracing Rastafarianism, and taking on big wave surfing. In 1999 Cass and his friend Ian won the World Big Wave Championships. Today Cass is a controversial figure in the surfing world, still wanting to make his mark. Cass and Ahmed stand divided, but Cass echoes is father’s earlier efforts, teaching a new generation of black children to ride the waves.
